“In brightest day, in blackest night
No evil shall escape my sight,
Let those who worship evil’s might,
Beware my power, Green Lanterns Light”
-Green Lantern Corps
Well, I liked the movie. A lot of people didn’t (Rotten Tomatoes Peeps =P and some of my friends here) but I felt it was not that bad. Ryan Reynolds did well, CGI was really really good but story was flat. They could have made the character more lovable then focusing on special effects. That’s the problem with movies nowadays… they focus so much on the effects that they forget about delivering a good story.
Regardless, I was able to get some “chicken soup” out of it!
1- To be light.
What’s a Lantern? I mean, it’s literal meaning?
A lantern is a portable lighting device used to illuminate broad areas. Lanterns may also be used for signaling, to guide your path somewhere or as general light sources for camping. In the older days it would have been used like a torch. Dim varieties are often used for decoration. The term “lantern” is also used more generically to mean a ‘light source’ or the enclosure for a light source, i.e., the housing for the lamp and lens — that is the top section — of a lighthouse -wiki
We are like Lanterns. We are to be the light.
“You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.” -Matthew 5
God has called us to be the light of the world. To be the light in someones darkest life.
2- To be fearless
“The one thing a Green Lantern is supposed to be is fearless. That isn’t me…” -Hal Jordan
Fear. We all know the feeling. We all grew up experiencing different levels of fear. One of the things I feared the most is the dark. I hate being in the dark when I was young. You never know what crept in the shadows. Watching a horror movie doesn’t help one bit.
It can be dogs that you are afraid of. Bunnies? =P Your neighbor, boss? Death?
“The LORD is for me, so I will have no fear. What can mere people do to me?” Psalm 118:6
David knew what fear is all about but he also knew who God is. With God, fear does not exist.
“In brightest day, in blackest night
No evil shall escape my sight,
Let those who worship evil’s might,
Beware my power, Green Lanterns Light”
“Beware my power“. We have that power too! God is on our side, so if He is for us, who can be against us?
3- To be strong.
When Hal confronted “the guardians” he said this
“We are only human. We admit we are afraid and vulnerable but we are not weak” (Paraphrase)
The voice at the end of the movie ( WHO WAS HE ANYWAY?!?!?!) said this as well “His humanity, initially considered to be a weakness, proved to be his greatest strength”
Yes it’s true. As humans, we do have “faulties”. But I agree with MR.Hal, it doesn’t make us weak. You never know that your weakness can turn out to be your strength.
That light lives in us, strengthen us at times when we are weak.
“Because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.” -1John 4:4
“He gives power to the weak, and to those who have no might He increases strength”
-Isaiah 40
We are to be fearless because God is with us and lives in us. Strong cause God strengthen us.
Well, here are my 2cents. Love it or hate this blog on how I view the movie.
BE GREEN. BE A LANTERN.
